I decided to buy an engine stand to make it easier to work on the engine. With an engine stand, the engine is secured in place at a comfortable height, and it can be rotated along its axis to different positions. As per Richard Atwell's review of engine supports, it is clear that the "C" type is the most desirable in terms of stability, so I found a Torin T25671 from AdvanceAutoParts for $85 including shipping. The so called universal plate that comes with the stand does not fit the VW engine, so I had to get a separate 3-arm yoke to be able to mount the engine onto the stand. Browsing The Samba, I found a 3-arm yoke specifically designed to fit the VW engine for $56 + shipping, that fits the standard 2-3/8" id engine stand pipe. The only missing part was a hole to pin the yoke in place, so I drilled it without much trouble with a drill press.
Assembling the stand was relatively easy, and now I have the engine comfortably mounted on the engine stand inside my home, very conveniently located!
